Massman Automation’s Timeline

1978

Massman Automation Designs had its start in the garage of Burl Massman.

1979

Burl Massman sells the first Massman Automation Designs machine to Chamberlain Manufacturing Corporation in Albia, Iowa. The machine was designed to wrap aluminum storm doors for shipping.

1983

Massman moves out of Burl’s garage and into its first building

2003

The need for more space is undeniable. Massman completes an expansion, adding more assembly and office space.

2005

Burl retires, selling the business to Jeff Bigger, former VP of Douglas Machine and Former President of Brenton Engineering.

2005

Massman acquires Midmac, helping expand the company’s product offerings into the filter assembly division.

2008

Massman acquires Sabel Engineering, adding bottom load and robotic case packers to its growing case packing product line.

2010

Massman acquires Talon Manufacturing, adding microwave popcorn packaging and flex pouch packaging to Massman’s product lines.

2011

Due to increased business Massman expands, adding 14,250 square feet of assembly and office space, also adding a new break area, engineering department and more conference rooms.

2012

Massman acquires both PSA (Packaging Systems Automation) and PASE Group, adding cartoners, product placers/handlers (PSA), liquid fillers, drum/tote fillers, denesters and depalletizers (PASE) to its product offerings.

2013

Massman acquires Bedford Technology® LLC’s packaging equipment division, enabling Massman to broaden its presence in the consumer packaging market by now offering recloseable packaging solutions to its customers.

2016

Massman acquires both Elliot Manufacturing and EDL Packaging, greatly expanding Massman’s offerings into case erector and sealers (Elliot), and flexible packaging options such as shrink wrapping and shrink bundling (EDL).

2019

Massman acquires DTM Packaging and Custom Automation, a leader in machinery manufacturing and re-manufacturing as well as the integration and automation of production lines. The strategic addition allows Massman to offer complete packaging line solutions for a variety of industries.

2022

Massman aquires NEM New England Machinery. NEM product lines include bottle Unscramblers, Orienters, Cappers, Retorquers, and Lidders. NEM also provides several types of specialty equipment including

Pluggers, Pump Sorters and Placers, Scoop Feeders, and Spout Inserters.

2024

Massman Companies builds a 72,000 sq foot state of the art facility on 80 acres of land in Alexandria, MN which serve as a new building location for Massman Companies and the second operating facility for Massman Automation.
